bah! you people need to realize that gaming is a hobby! hobbies cost money! really, the books aren't THAT expensive. They're 20 bucks each (USF) for the new 3.5 player's handbook, dmg, and monster manual, which when you think about it isn't really that much. I've bought computer games that cost that much, and have only about 100 hours of gameplay. These books provide thousands upon millions of hours of gaming, and besides, only one or two copies of the players are needed, and only one of the monster manual and dmg per group. hardcore gamers can buy the class books, that'll run you 15 bucks each, and all the expansions like the psionics handbook, book of vile darkness/exalted deeds, savage specias, epic handbook, etc...but you don't need them to play. In short, 60 bucks is a small price to pay considering the payback in gameplay, replayibility, and overall fun :)

Its a really expensive hobby -- rofl. It costs what? 20-30 bucks per guy? Why dont you just use your imagination 100%?
Seems... like a waste if your going to use ur imagination 100% anyways.

Also, if you plan to play the game not by yourself, you could always pitch in with a few friends who want to play with you, and all of you buy the books. It will greatly reduce the price if you play with a lot of people, and could possible make the gameplay more interesting after each of you have read the books.
