This is a guide to help out newcomers to The Frozen Throne. The transition from Reign of Chaos to The Frozen Throne is rough. Learning what micromanagement is can be complicated and frustrating. "Micro" makes the best players stand out and leaves the beginners way at the bottom. So these uses of Tier One units should help you out most. Undead Hero of choice: Death Knight (death coil and aura) Ghouls: The ghoul is a great rush tactic. The key is to not leave them attacking units contantly. Send them to attack, have them get one or two hits in, then pull them back for a split second and then throw them in to attack again. If you're lazy with your ghouls then they will surely die. Just be sure to keep them moving. Sleep a hero, wrap a handful of ghouls around him, and then kill it. If it doesn't get you the game (which it should) your Dreadlord will get free experience! Crypt Fiends: These spiders are a vital part of an Undead army. Throw a handful of ghouls in front of them that are micro'ed in the way shown above, matched with Fiends that fire once and move back with the ghouls then fire again. This will destroy an entire force and you may escape with few or no casualties. Fiends are also great for killing heroes by focus firing. Humans Hero of Choice: Archmage (elementals and blizzard) Footmen: No tier one unit deals bonus damage against Footmen, so use them as support for other units. Remember that Footmen are not your primary attack force. As with ghouls, you should use them to hit once or twice, move back, then attack a split second later. Footmen, as with ghouls, work well with a Storm Bolt to surround heroes. But Footmen get the job done better with their higher hit points! Riflemen: These are kingpin warriors that can be used very efficiently. Backed by footmen using the same strategy as above, and a Thunder Clap/Blizzard/Flame Strike, the Rifleman usefulness is extraordinary! Since they are a ranged unit, you can fire them once and pull them back, send in some footmen to distract them (don't forget to micro them) and then fire again. Repeat and shortly your enemy will not have an army. Militia: Perhaps their best use is to fend off harasses backed up with Riflemen. This makes it important to get Riflemen before Footmen. Harasses by a hero? Stun him/her and then surround him with Militia while focus firing with your riflemen. If you have riflemen and they have an early attack force, use militia as you use ghouls and Footmen and attack, fall back, attack again. (what this does is let your melee live longer for your ranged to lay the hammer on their units). Night Elves Hero of Choice: Priestess of the Moon (Searing Arrows and Aura) Huntress: The Huntress is a great unit for disposing of infantry. Use them to attack once or twice, fall back a few steps and attack again. Repeat over and over. Archers are great to use with Huntresses. Remember to get 4-6 Huntresses in an early attack force. Archers: Used with a Demon Hunter or a group of Huntresses, the Archers can deal massive damage without a scratch. Remember to keep moving them back with your Huntress/DH so that you don't lose ground and live long enough to kill the enemy army. Glaive Throwers: Use them like any other ranged unit to deal high amounts of damage each shot, fall back and then repeat. This is useful... extremely useful. Just remember they have slow speed and balance it with when you micro your other units. Orcs Hero of Choice: Shadow Hunter (healing wave and wards) Grunts: These are the most dangerous melee units. I say dangerous because if you lose them you may lose the game. Therefore, I would suggest that you use them with a Tauren Chieftan's Endurance Aura and war stomp for best efficiency. Use them to attack twice, then fall back and then attack again. Make sure that you have Headhunters or Demolishers to get a few extra hits in. Headhunters: As with any other ranged unit and with the purpose I used above, the Headhunters purpose can be appies with maximum efficiency. |
