ok... lemme get on my soapbox for this one...

why are we spending MILLIONS of dollars to send a probe to mars to take pictures and pick up dirt??? wtf! so what if their is 100~ guys at nasa who are bored off their ass and wanted to blow somemore of the gov.'s money and send a golfcart to mars! to the picture part of it all i have to say is why can we get a good close picture or a star or planet BILLIONS of miles away, BUT we can't get a close up of Mars from here on earth??? C'mon people, stupid shit like this is why taxes go up, and my paycheck goes down.

We have enough problems on earth already(poverty, low wages, etc), why waste money worrying about other worlds when our own needs so much help. With that money that could of helped millions of needy people across the world. I think it's cool and all to explore mars but the money could be wasted on much better things.

I think its something that needs to be done -- (colinization possibly?). Wonder if they find something that could help us here, on earth (or anywere for that matter?). It could help us alot...

If they find mass amounts of frozen water, what if we were to bring some back and examine them to find traces of bacteria or something, I would like to know if mars had life, but still, its a waste of money at the same time. If the US had the money and didnt have any other use for it then good, but we dont.

Your government is way too rich guys, first spending millions on war, sceond building up Iraq, and now a probe to an alien planet. How many times do scientists need to get a probe up on mars?? the pathfinder landed on mars some 6 years ago, and now another one... not to mention about the cost.

I think that curiosity is the driving force in human beings, period. I am, like many people, curious as to what is up on Mars. Let's face it, if we don't start controlling population, Earth will be populated beyond belief. With AIDS infested countries like India expected to rise over China by 2006, it's no wonder NASA is sending probes to Mars. With any luck, colonies can be established to take the load off of Earth for a bit.

Anyhoo, that being said, we are concentrating on the wrong things. Isn't this amazing? We have our technology on another planet, but we still can't take care of starvation. Let me spell this out for you; B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T

This isn't about money Lincoln, this is about morale. Why send spacecraft to other planets if we have starvation, disease, overpopulation, poverty, and debt in this country? These issues are more important to me than any paycheck. We need to start concentrating on the quality of our world before we fuck ourselves too hard and there is no more hope.

I wasn't saying it's all about money, I'm just saying that I think we're just wasting it. I know exactly what you mean. This world is so fucked up that there is no hope for it honostly. If your not a politician, you don't matter. If you live in a 3rd world country and have no food/water, 9/10 of the world doesn't care or if they do they won't do anything about it. like i said it's not ALL about money, but i think that we are blowing our tax dollars on some bullshit like this, instead of helping Iraqis/Afganis our more or any other country in need of some help. it's all just horseshit IMO.

such a one sided debate. From my understanding that probe or golfcart was sent a long time ago. way things are going here on earth we need to start looking for a place to live if the earth turns to dust one day. It cost alot of money for columbus to sail off to dicover america. I say set back relax and lets see what we can find.

Posted By Tokin on 1/09/04 @ 9:11:14 PM
No, they sent a probe a long time ago, but they messed up and broke it because they calculated something wrong. What a waste of...was it 4 million? Yeah.

Anyway, my teacher was talking about since its so far away it takes 8 minutes for them to tell it anything. SOOOO if it is heading for a cliff, and is going to drop before they can send information for it to turn in time, boom. Its fucked.

I believe that this probe has been sent to Mars because it is the next logical step. I agree with LL, NASA has been spending a lot of time sitting on their asses doing nothing but simple outer atmosphere stuff. As we all know, Bush said that he's opening up the moon program again. On the moon we'll be able to study the long term effect of living in an alien enviroment.

With the information we get from that, we'll be able to predict and accuratly plan for a long term "vacation" (for lack of a better word) on Mars. We all have to admit, that we are draining this planet pretty fast, and although probably not fast enough to worry about at this time, we are still filling it up.

I know that many of you think that this is a huge waste of time, but what else have we to explore? Sorry to sound like Startrek, but space really is the final frontier. Who knows what is out there to discover, maybe some new form of energy, as in the case of America, something to replace tobacco products wink.gif . All I know is that whatever the case be, I hope space travel will be commercialized, so I can go before I die.

Posted By Tokin on 1/09/04 @ 9:53:00 PM
I mean, I want it to go, I just wish it didnt cost so much =\

Why not send a suped up RC car with a shovel taped on?! Hah, kidding.

You know, if they find frozen water on mars...and now they say the moon may have some forzen water on it, and they bring it to earth, it would help alot, like..start to make all the deserts go away, then we have alot more space to live in. Not alot, but w/e, random thought.

Posted By lincolnluxor on 1/09/04 @ 10:03:12 PM
now sending man back to moon is a GOOD idea... lets try to work on the moon b4 we head on out to mars. I still think that mars is a waste of time for now.

Posted By Scoogen on 1/09/04 @ 10:10:18 PM
You've gotta remember that these NASA people are multi-tasking. We are working in leaps and bounds to get back to the moon, in what is it? 2012? But to keep the space buisness still booming, they're already making the preparations for travel to Mars. So really, what they're doing is making sure that they wont be sitting on their asses like they have been. All the power to 'em!

Okay, first, my clout, 4th year astrology student, 1st place in nasa's future astrologists 99, 2nd in '00, 1st in 01.

First, the poverty issue, and we have conversations about this daily, obviously.

Many people think that we are blowing tax dollars, or spending money fruitlessly when there are millions of people in need of food, clothes, housing, etc. etc..
These people make themselves sound good by pointing out that a probe costs 14.2 million dollars, or a ship costs 43.3million dollars.
Wow, pretty expensive right? That could buy a lot of big macs, right?
Are you aware that america alone spends on average over 500million DOLLARS year for other countries and poverty worldwide? Much less the donations from federally owned companies of food, clothing, etc.
in 2000 alone we spent close to 4 trillion, not million, trillion, on poverty.

Did it do anything? of course, would you even notice it? of course not.

Poverty is a serious problem, but 14.2million or 43.3 million, or 4 trillion will not end poverty. Donations and labor will not end poverty. No, don't say otherwise, because you are wrong, it has been tried and tried again over the last 50 years in varying degrees, both locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.. its been a global fucking effort.

"Why don't they just load up a rocket and put a few astronauts on it and send it to mars already, whats up with all the probes?"

68%, thats 2 out of every 3, mission to mars have failed. Would you send your daughter, wife/husband, self on a mission to mars when you have a 32% chance for success? Only if your crazy or suicidal.

Scoogen, proud of you, you actually brought to the debate some recent political development.

Bush has boosted the moon program, and we are going to attempt and research for a moonbase system, to understand and develop 'space-life' and its affects. We will still send missions to mars when the scientists deem it appropiate, no offense intended here, but the consensus working for nasa have a lot more information and understanding of the economy and reasons for what they do then you or I will ever know.

Missions to mars will continue, but the moon program is now priority in funding, pending the results of the current mars mission. (basically this means that as soon as this mission is done, it goes to the moon, unless we find frozen water, evidence of hydrogen, fossils, or little green men, then we'll pump more for mars)

Am I saying that I don't care about poverty or that we should just give up because hell, 44million nor 4 trillion did anything.

NO, Absolutely NOT

All i'm saying, is that I don't want people to have the misconception that our government is so cruel hearted as to care more from a trip to the moon then for 2 billion hungry people.

Side note, this same country you people are saying doesn't care for poverty.. research it a little.. find out what country has done more then any other for poverty and hunger, go ahead, research it.

If i have offended anyone, i apologize, I don't have time to proofread this post, and i was interrupted several times during the typing of it, so I lost focus several times. Again, if I have offended you, i apologize it was unintended, nor did I mean to insult anyone if I did. These are my opinions and any stated facts, are indeed facts and you can check them yourselves.

Edit: Changed a don't to doesn't. Wish I could proofread the whole thing but I have to go.
