Playstation 3 Information Playstation 3 Information (Origional Post)

I was reading a recent article that was talking about playstation 3's new revolutionary cell technology which would replace the cpu using ultra small silicon tidbits containing tiny processors meshed with memory and communication circuits. IBM presumes that the cell technolgy Dime sized piece of silicon will pack the power of 36 desktops at a mere cost of 5$; also IBM shceme call for each cell to contain the equivalent of a 1 ghz processor and for cell chips to hold 500mb to 1gb of memory for allocating among cells as needed. The technology for merging processors with memory is not a new thing it is used in modern appliances, multimedia gear, and cars, the only new objective of IBM's cell technology is to have this done at much higher minicule. That is why Sony is teaming up with Ibm and Toshiba to make the new console which current financial planning delegates 400 million dollars for production costs. If the PS3 actually incorporates cell technology game design, and game playing will change. For example, with the cell chip design you wouldn't have a single cpu running data for several charcters at a time instead, it would be more likely that a single cell would control it's own character endowing each one it's own brain. However, cell technology would require more then a dvd to make a game remotely satisfying, therefore speculations of the ps3 running through an internet connection to feed its hungry cells are rampant.

I just dont know how game companys are going to be able to produce games for it V_V.

That cell technology seems to pwn, but in the long run it doesn't seem to effect and it appers that it will be very costly for Sony. I don't know what those kooks are dreaming up at Microsoft Gaming Studios, but God only knows what there putting into the Xbox 2.

That is extremely outdated news... The PS3 cell technology supposedly failed a few months ago and the whole project was scrapped. Now PS3 is being designed as an add on to a PC, apparenty it is somewhat similar to a PCI card with controller and memory ports.

Just to get this straight, this is off of www.geek.com and it's off of game geek. This may turn out to be 100% false... but it also may be 100% true.

Then again, every lie has some truth to it. wink.gif damn 633|<z02z!!!

Onwards... The technology for merging processors with memory really isn't a new thing. Every processor has memory. Even the ooooold Pentium 1. This memory is called cache (pronounced cash). There is L1(level one), L2(level two), and on the newest Intel xeon there is 1MB of L3 cache!

The cache is so the processor doesn't have to fetch commonly used programs from the ram and HD constantly. Getting info from L1 is like getting sugar from your home, L2 is like walking to your neighbors house, the Ram is like going to a different state, and the HD is like going to a different country.

well I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but how come Sony doesn't use this cell technology to creat a new top-of-the-line PC? The PC industry is much larger then the Consol industry since PCs can do much more then run games.

It seems like a pretty good system to me. I can't wait till it comes out!

Wow, whomever you are. There is a sock in my mouth right now.

In all seriousness, you bring up a very VERY good point. You have me so stumped I can't even describe it. -hands cookie-

oo! cookie, yay!

anyways, I think that either they're developing it already or there's some problem with it not allowing them to because I'm pretty sure they're smart enough to figure that out on their own... kind of sure anyways, lol
