Pete Rose, baseballs all time leading hit leader, Should he be allowed in the Baseball hall of fame? He was caught gambling on games as a General Manager (after he retired), and recently he addmited to gambling on many games. He said that he never bet againsn't his own team, but this is contraversial to some people. He has been banned from baseball for nearly 20 years now, do you think that is enuf punishment for him, or should he not get in the hall?

I think that a ban from his 'dream' for nearly 20 years is enuf for this guy. He's the ALL TIME leading hit leader... he SHOULD be in the hall IMO.

what do you think?

I say ya. I really think the issue of him being discharged from baseball is from less than reasonable circumstances. I know, he broke some major rule about gambling on the sport, but really.... how bad can that be. If there is no evidence of him betting on the other team, then purposefully making his team lose the game, there should be no big issue. Being such a good player, I say that he should be, because we need to know what the best of the best is like... Not knowing because of some stupid paper issue is truly stupid. Let him back in for the hall of fame, and nothing more.

I think he should be allowed in, for the following.

One, the hall of fame for baseball, is that what it said, the hall of fame, meaning that if you outshone any and all other players in baseball related statistics, then you are admitted.

If you have the most hits, you qualify, if you throw the most strikes, you qualify, if you catch the most balls, you qualify, etc. etc..

Pete Rose was one of the most talented and gifted athletes to ever grace the sport of baseball, now think about this objectively and put any bias you have aside, you may not like him, but in his time he was the best, and this is not opinion, look at the statistics, he-was-the-best.

QUOTE
What is the Hall of Fame?

A recognition system for individuals who excell above the "normal" standards.

QUOTE
Who is Pete Rose?

In short, one of the best baseball players to ever play the game to this day, who, needless to say, put many other athletes to shame, in comparison.

QUOTE
Why is there controversy over Pete Rose and the Hall of Fame?

Pete Rose was discovered to have gambled on games, both while he played and after he retired. This was illegal, in the manner he practiced it, and frowned upon heavily by society, and due to activists and strong media urging, he was denied the Hall of Fame.

QUOTE
But didn't you say the Hall of Fame was for athletic ability alone, not 'extracurricular activities'?

Why, yes, I believe I did say that. Pete Rose excelled at baseball, not only meeting all criteria for Hall of Fame admittance, and besting all other canidates, but he did so repeatedly.

QUOTE
So, the only reason Pete Rose has gotten all this grief is because he gambled?

Yes, there has never been any other argument for denial to the Hall of Fame

-----------------------------------------------------

Pete Rose excelled at baseball, and was rightfully apt for acceptance into the Hall of Fame.

Pete Rose gambled, as did millions of others, and thus was denied acceptance into the Hall of Fame.

Pete Rose put up with a 20 year ban from baseball, not only did he put up with it, but he was civil, kind and generous, and never gave a public cross-word, nor bad mouth the committee overseeing the Hall of Fame and Pete Rose situation.

-----------------------------------------------------

I believe that Pete Rose should rightfully be in the Hall of Fame forever, because he did what was required in his sport, he presented a clean-cut manner to society, and was in all aspects an all-american. He gambled, which was at the time illegal, but is now legal and sanctioned. He served a 20 year punishment, silently. I believe there is not any reason at all for him to be denied the one thing he worked so hard for.

A child is told repeatedly not to stay up to late and eat candy before supper, or if s/he does, then s/he will never be able to watch cartoons again. Yet children do this all the time, yet they end up watching Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.

Pete Rose deserves it, he earned it, worked for it, and was punished for his misdeeds, that, technically should not have disqualified him in the first place.
