Spoilers abound. Please don't read any further if you don't wish to have part of the story ruined for you.
So, what's up with Shinra at the end of the game, talking about the energy the Farplane has? He goes on and on about how he wants to extract the life force as usable energy. And his name is Shinra, after all.
Is this a thinly veiled connection to the world of Final Fantasy VII, or just fanservice for long-time players of the series?

I think it most likely fanservice so that the long time players will have a bit more of a connection to the game. A lot of the "old school" gamers have gotten frustrated with the direction the series has gone recently, so Square will throw this kind of thing in there to try to draw these old school gamers into the world a bit more, to draw them into the story better.
