Cable/dsl Connections Cable/dsl Connections (Origional Post)

All my friends who have cable or dsl seem to have real bad problems with pop ups and what not. I have even tried to help them by download several freeware pop up blockers, but that does not seem to help. When i turn the firewall on, that also does not seem to have any effect to block incomming connections to your computer. I'm getting cable real soon and i do not want the same problems like all my friends do. Do you have any suggestions on how i can prevent this happening to my computer? Any recommendations on programs i should download?

most likely you have spyware... download Adware 6 or SpyBot Search and Destroy from download.com, run them, then see if it's better.

It depends on what you are doing when you are getting said pop-ups...

If you use Internet Explorer, there is the problem.

Run Ad-Aware, like Lincolnluxor said.

Then, if you getting pop-ups from P2P programs, there is nothing you can do usually, just dont use that P2P. It probably isn't very good either, seeing as the ones I have tried dont have pop-ups and work fine.

Then there are Microsoft Messenger Pop-Ups..which suck just as bad because no pop-up blocker catches them...You have to disable the service all together.

Just go into C:\Program Files\

Go in and find the folder 'Messenger' and delete it. You may not be able to delete all of it, because it may be in use.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end the process 'msmsgs' or something similar to that. Then try deleting all of it..even if you dont get it all, it wont work properly.

Then, go into MSConfig and stop 'msmsgs' from starting up, so you don't get an error every time that you boot up because it couldn't find it.

Good luck.

use what ll said thats what i use and u must run it everyweek because even with it new popup will get into ur pc even if u use it trust me. I run search and destroy once a week and delete at least 3pop ups from sites and to block most pop ups is to avoid porn sites.

As aforementioned, Spybot should do the trick.

Also, you should use a popup blocking browser. Such as Mozilla Firefox.
