Ya google would be my best guess too. Google is so useful! Good thing it ain't owned by Microsoft or else it would crash every 20 mins. Standard precedure.

Well your not on a 'Battle.net' Server. You are on your own server. But I don't know how, but I've seen it in a LOT (I mean a LOT of other forums)

Further, the servers you connect to via b.net are owned by AT&T, its just like all other game servers.
You have client files that communicate with server files, and allow you to play a game.
To run your own server, basically, you configure and host your version of server files for diablo 2, and allow other players to connect to you, with certain patches that allow the pair to communicate effectively.
