Does anyone think the legal voting age should be lowered or not. Personally I think it should because, I started getting interested in politics in like fifth grade. I new allot by sixth grade. I think the voting age should be lowered to at least fifteen. What do you guys think.

no way... if anything... it should be raised. The youth of america don't know the right stuff. They (mainly) don't think for themselves and just follow what ever news programs thier parents watch.

I'm not sure if it should be raised. Personally I think 18 year olds aren't influenced by their parents. However, I do see your point about 15 year olds.

I don't think that it should be lowered because I agree with Lincoln. A lot of people would base their vote on what their parents think.
I don't think it should be raised either. I think that most people who are eighteen or older are not really influenced by their parents too much. A lot of eighteen years olds do ot live with their parents and I think that most of them have their own views on things anyways.

I guess you could say, "most people under eighteen are influenced by their parents". I'm not, I have my own views on politics.

No, hell no. 18 is fine.

Last time I checked, you're still considered as a "youth." I will have to agree with you somewhat, though. It's not just the youths of America that obey what their TV says, it's pretty much everyone. By everyone, I don't mean "everyone." I mean the masses, as in all age groups, races, etc. Modern media controls who wins, and who loses. Simple as that.
Also, the very argument of "people being influenced by their parents" is invalid. No matter what, most of the time people are pretty influenced by their parents. "Like father, like son." they say, and for good reason, too. Usually kids with racist parents are racist, or so I've seen. Those taught to be independent, are independent. My main point is, a person doesn't have to be of age, or live with their parents to be influenced by them.
Apparently, according to some experts, your vote doesn't count anyway. Case in point, Last Election.

I wasn't denying that I was youth... I know I am. And honostly I really do believe the voting age should be 25. I live with 100+ other 18-28 year olds, and I wouldn't trust but maybe 5 to make a logical decision on who could be our president (none of which are under 25). Most are completely ignorent as to what is going on in politics, and could care less too (unless it deals with our pay checks).
and I know the news controls us... I was just saying that most watch what thier parents watch. I find myself watching CNN & MSNBC more then any other news channel, but my parents are sole supporters of Fox News (they refuse to watch anything else).
Again... 99.9% of all youth I do not trust putting the US's president in office, but I'll have to deal with it cause they will never raise it...

How do you know most 18 year-olds don't give shit about politics? I'm only thirteen, and there is nothing more that I am interested in. Except perhaps hott girls.

I forget what state, but I hered that they were lowering the leagle voting age. For example : If you were 18 1 vote : If you were 16 1/2 of a vote : If you were 14-15 1/4 of a vote.

I just checked it out here's what I found. Voting Age News ... John Vasconcellos, D-San Jose, would lower the state's legal voting age to 14. The catch is that it would take four 14 or 15 year olds to make up a whole vote. ... www.youthrights.org/articles/votenews.html - 43k - Cached - Similar pages

I think they should change it in all states or just keep it how it is. It would be dumb for different states to have different requirements for voting age.

Well I see your point. It's America's president. If one state is going to change the requirements the rest of America should, but there is nothing we can do about it. Unless you know how to right a bill.

I don't trust putting 99.999999% of any age group in office.

I don't trust many people either, but a lot of people vote to put the president in office, so I guess I will have to deal with it as well.
Scuba is not the best at spelling, but that is not importnat. Give him a break. lol You knew what he was trying to say.

Think about how many smart, educated, and independantly-thinking teenagers and children there are out in the world.
This is actually about the same percent as adults... You just don't realize it because by the time they're adults and can't rely on thier parents they're too fucking stupid to make it anywhere in the world. Yes, the voting age should be lowered, even though I know it's not going to.
|
|
Posted By TMaC on 8/20/04 @ 9:36:14 AM

That is true. Most adults would not make a better decision than most teenagers. It is actually pretty sad. I don't think that it should be lowered. I just think that there is no way that it should be raised.
The voting system has be in affect for a long time now, and it has done us well for the most part. I say we stop complaining about it and just deal with it as it is. It will not change most likely.
