Unreal Tournament 2004 Unreal Tournament 2004 (Origional Post)

This is some information I've found about UT2004. It is not written by me, but instaesd copied off planetunreal.com:

"What’s Unreal Tournament 2004?
The Unreal Tournament rages on in Unreal Tournament 2004! Once again being co-created by Epic Games and Digital Extremes, UT2004 will basically be a severely upgraded version of UT2003 with all sorts of new content, an improved engine, and two new gameplay modes: "Assault" and "Onslaught," which adds controllable land, space, and air-based vehicles. For more information, check out this GameSpy.com Preview, this other GameSpy.com preview, this CliffyB interview, and drool at the official screenshots.

Oh, and also be sure to read PlanetUnreal's UT2004 trip report, which details what happened when the PU Staff visited Epic to check out the game!

When is it coming out? Is it free? Will there be a demo?

UT2004 is scheduled to be released in time for Christmas, meaning November or December. UT2004 is a stand-alone retail product, but Atari may be offering a rebate to people who already purchased UT2003. Mark Rein has confirmed there will indeed be a UT2004 demo, and that this demo will contain Onslaught mode (but not Assault).

What's this I hear about backwards compatibility?

UT2004 will not not break compatibility. UT2003 mods will work with UT2004, and UT2004 users will be able to join games on UT2003 servers, but not vice versa. Epic will be releasing a patch for UT2003 later this year that will enable network compatibility.

So what's the new stuff?

Besides the new gameplay modes (described below), vehicles, and other improvements, UT2004 includes all the content from UT2003 and both of the free bonus packs. But before you worry about this being a simple repackaging of UT2004, Atari claims, "in total, Unreal Tournament 2004 will ship with more never-before-seen maps than the entire number of maps that shipped with Unreal Tournament 2003!" So there's plenty of new stuff, including:

20 never-before-seen maps for the existing game types, featuring tons of new textures, new static meshes and new music. It's a field day for mod makers! Also included are new maps from Digital Extremes designed specifically to appeal to "hardcore" UT players.
Live voice chat over LAN and internet with 3D audio (on supported sound cards) so players can sense where voices emanate from. Using a microphone and headset (not included), players can communicate with teammates and buddies or just yell at everybody who gets in their way! Several settings are provided to allow users to customize their voice chat experience.
Fan-favorite Unreal characters will return to challenge in the tournaments, including the Skaarj, the Necris and the infamous Xan Kriegor.
UnrealTV match broadcast system will allow for hundreds of people to view an Unreal Tournament 2004 match with minimal performance impact on game server. UnrealTV will be fully integrated into the server browser to make it easy to located broadcasted matches.
Complete end-user voting system that will allow users to choose game type, maps, mutators, rules and settings and will also provide the ability to remove troublesome players from the game. Custom clan-match voting system will allow clans to negotiate acceptable game settings prior to a competitive match.
A completely redesigned user interface (UI) will be easier to navigate and support context-sensitive menus, an in-game login menu (to improve team balancing) and an improved server browser with enhanced server filtering options. The underlying user interface system has been reengineered to be easier for Mod authors to build menus and implement their own UI designs.
Tons of cool gameplay tweaks and refinements including unique crosshairs for each weapon, the ability to carry dual Assault Rifles, improved computer-controlled "Bot" team coordination and movement, network bandwidth usage optimizations and more!
What gameplay modes are in UT2004?

All the gameplay modes from the original UT2003 along with the modes added in the bonus packs (like Invasion) will be in UT2004. The two new gameplay modes are:

Assault Mode - The much heralded single-player oriented gametype returns with all-out battles with land, space and air-based vehicles on the home worlds of various Unreal Tournament 2004 combatants. In one scenario, players will experience the adrenaline rush of space-based battle while attacking or defending a Skaarj mother ship. Another scenario takes place on Xan Kriegor's mechanical home world where players attack or defend a robot construction factory. There are currently six Assault scenarios planned to ship with the game.
Onslaught Mode - New multi-player oriented combat game type on custom-built large-scale maps featuring awesome new weapons and land- and air-based vehicles. From the lethal bomber to the nefarious spider mines - players will work as teams to control map points and win the conflict. There are currently nine Onslaught maps planned to ship with the game.
On July 24th, Mark Rein posted better descriptions of these two new gametypes:
ASSAULT
Assault is an objective/team based game mode in which two teams (attackers and defenders) battle each other in epic (and sometimes historical) battles taking place in the Unreal universe. Attackers have several objectives to accomplish in order to win the round.

Defenders must prevent the attackers from doing so in order to win. Several rounds are played and teams can exchange roles after each round. There are several configurable options, such as the number of rounds in a match, and the time limit for each round.

Accomplishing objectives may involve reaching a key location, using machinery or computers in the level, or destroying a critical piece of hardware.

Assault also features many different useable vehicles and turrets, including Space Fighters, Buggies, Tanks, Energy Turrets, a Minigun Turret and the all powerful Ion Cannon.

ONSLAUGHT

Onslaught is a large scale, team and vehicle based game mode in which players battle for control of huge exterior settings. Since these settings are so large one naturally needs a way to traverse these distances, hence there are a variety of vehicles that can be used in Onslaught. These vehicles are built to not only move but also destroy your foes.

Each team has their own vehicles and you cannot steal your foes vehicles unless they unlock them by first getting into them. If your enemy jumps into a tank and then leaps out to pick up ammo you can then hijack it and turn the tables on him!

The main objective in any Onslaught game is to destroy your enemies' "Power Core." This critical point is usually located in the heart of your opponent's base. Sounds simple, right? Here's the catch - a Power Core cannot be damaged unless your team has a link to it.

How do you acquire a link? By controlling the smaller "Power Nodes" on the map and making a connection from your own Power Core to your opponents. Power Nodes begin as neutral points in the level and once they're touched they begin to build for your team. At this point the opposing team can attack and try to destroy the Node as it is being constructed. If they manage to destroy it it will go neutral again and can be re-claimed by either team. If they fail to destroy it the Node will be built for your own team and a link will be made to your own Power Core.

The next step in an Onslaught map involves proceeding to the next Node. Since the enemies Power Core can only be damaged if there is a link to your own Core you'll have to take over a number of Nodes in order to make this connection. It is extremely important to note that you can ONLY take over a Node if you control an adjacent Node. You must progress across the map, taking over point by point, in order to stage an assault on your enemies' Core.

Since death comes quick in the Tournament it is also good to know that once your team controls a Node you can then choose to respawn at it. This allows a team to have an advancing presence on any given map."

Same here, it's also easier to tell the admin to kick afks or to disable awps (counter-strike) when they're 10 feet away from you

I have but without multiplayer it wasnt much

Unreal (non-tournament) sucks. The first one was ok, but they are much better for console games. Unreal Tournament games should be kept on the PC, and Unreal games should be kept on consoles.

Posted By Fake on 9/22/03 @ 4:33:23 PM
That is true because it was online, but imageine if their was only single-player for Unreal Championship............ boring wink.gif.

Posted By Tokin on 9/22/03 @ 4:46:33 PM
True...but Unreal 2 was a single player game..and I heard some good reviews about it, I think the thing they went on and on about was the graphics...I cant remember exactly, that was a while ago..

Posted By Fake on 9/22/03 @ 5:07:36 PM
Well, it uses the same engine as UT2003, so ya the graphics are good, but that's about it wink.gif.

Posted By Momma on 9/22/03 @ 5:12:02 PM
My boyfriend and i are beta testing the multiplayer version of it so hopefully it will be cool.

Posted By Momma on 9/23/03 @ 10:33:30 AM
I don't know he might have contacts cause we have a friend who is working on maps for UT2004 and he and his group were going to enter that mod contest they had for UT2003 but plans feel through cause the mapper got hired by epic games. Now that i think about it we beta test alot of games probably cause he has a lot of experiance in beta testing because he has been involved in helping makes games.
