Genesis Image Problem

I leased my GV80 in June. I can’t count the number of times I’ve come out of a store and people are looking at my vehicle and say things like, ‘this is so cool looking, I love it. Who is Genesis? I’ve never heard of it…”. This week I called to schedule an oil change at a dealer (got the name from the app) in Michigan, I’m from Florida. They answered the phone, Dealer Name GMC-KIA”. I asked to speak to SERVICE and was transferred. I told the person I’d like to schedule an oil change. The person said she could take care of helping me, ‘what make vehicle?’ I said Genesis. Her reply was “is that a GMC?” Seriously??? Hyundai, needs to get serious about promoting this brand! If they don’t actively promote it, how will it ever be successful? I’m loving the attention the vehicle get, but…

Sorry I’m a little confused… why are you getting your Genesis serviced at a GMC/Kia dealership?

As for the lack of knowledge of the Genesis brand… I just mention the Tiger Woods crash and that is when people figure it out 😕

Nope. Apparently it’s a GMC, KIA, Subaru, Hyundai, Audi… dealer that operates service out of one location. I’ll know exactly on 9/20 when I have the appointment. My point is you shouldn’t have to say “it’s the one Tiger Woods crashed.” Luxury vehicles brands should be well recognized. Genesis has been out long enough, but isn’t. Pretty sure Mercedes, Audi, BMW, etc never have brand recognition problems. If Hyundai created Genesis to be a luxury brand, they’ve done a piss poor job of promoting it. However, to have the dealer service representative not know what Genesis is? That’s just unacceptable.

Dedicated Genesis service and sales would help a lot.

I walked out of the grocery yesterday and again was told "I like your Bentley". I was quick to say "No, it's a Genesis". This is the land of Bentley, G-Wagons, and now tons of the new Lamborghini. The Genesis is really probably throwing people off!

Genesis does very little advertising on TV. I am seeing ads on YouTube, but I’m sure people skip through them.

Dealers aren’t doing much to promote cars either.

I just came from the exact thing. My '11 Lincoln MKT, that I just sold to buy my GV80, was never promoted by Lincoln. They advertised all of their models quite aggressively, but practically never included the MKT. I loved that car, but Lincoln dumped it in 2019 (along with it's sister Ford Flex). The sad fact is the MKT's value sunk to record lows. My Genesis dealer offered me $6500. I sold it myself for $9800. Both were very low; the online valuers said about $12,900.

I definitely don’t think they have an image problem. The launch of every new luxury brand starts out similar, but once there are enough owners out there and reviews are good, the lack of knowledge will shift as the brand continues to improve. For a first attempt at an SUV, I’m my opinion, they did quite well. I drove a Lexus for 18 years and switched to buy the Genesis this time.

Totally agree with you. Looks like there’s not much importance laid down in the store fir the Brand.

I’ve also had mine confused for a Bentley. Probably because the same guy designed them. That, and the logo is similar.
I’m also amused by the tools on this site who ‘debadge’ their GV80. You know they just want people to think they’re driving a Bentley!

I know you mean fools! And, I agree.

The same folks that bought Chrysler 300's back in the day. That always annoyed me. I had a Quattroporte back in 2006 and I hated when Buick added the side vents. I corrected her really quick but other than the headlights there is certainly a resemblance.

This should eliminate any confusion:

Same here, went from longtime Lexus owner (hate the new grill!) to GV80. Without any real promotion, the demand for this car already far exceeds supply.
I got my Prestige 3.5T Cardiff Green w/ Snokey Green and Brown int. and the head turns, stares and compliments I get on this thing just in few times I've driven is unmatched! The color plus the design looks like nothing on the road. my closet 3 neighbor were in complete awe! This is the first time I've gotten a response like this from any car I've ever had. Even my mobile detailer was is in love with it. Said that's what he and his wife wanted to get but couldn't get find 1 so they went with the Palisade.

But to your main point. I think it could be a combination of not a lot of marketing yet due to chip/supply shortages. Dealers currently don't have much inventory to advertise. And I consider people like us who purchased Genesis/ GV80 vehicles as trend setters and leaders. Most other people look to see what others get and do and then follow and copy that. Maybe that's why so many vehicles on the road are of the shade of gray, black, white and silver. And the some are Badge snobs on top of that. We are setting the trend and it will catch on soon. The Genesis lineup is just so good people will follow.

Yes, I’ve had mine for six months now. Prestige, Cardiff green with the light tan interior.
I am continually being asked about it from strangers in parking lots, and have had at least three people take pictures (that I know of).
Definitely an attention getter.

Thanks for sharing. I ordered the same trim as yours and have been waiting since March. It was supposed to come mid-September, now October. I will be glad when it arrives and absolutely have no doubt it will get the same reaction. Even if it doesn’t, I like it and that’s all that matters when you’re the one paying.

Caught some teens taking selfies with it when I came out of the movie theater seeing the "latest Marvel Movie." I'm glad they had the good sense and decency not to lean on it. The remote start I sent from the app spooked them though but I had already seen them from the lobby door and they played it off well but looked back to see if I was actually the person that was going to get in it.

I agree I bought my Genesis in August this year and had some weird computer issues and when I called the dealership to schedule an appointment they asked if it was a Hyundai which I kindly said no it’s a Genesis GV80. I feel strongly as you do about the Quality of service if you pay for a great car like this you should be treated just like I was when I owned a Mercedes and not told to go find your car in the parking lot after it was serviced.
I did speak to the service manager about that and he agreed they have some work to do on their part for sure. Oh, my computer issues are still around but they are trying to figure it out. I guess we will all learn together.
On the issue of ppl not knowing the car I have also had ppl asking and looking at my car and saying WOW they love the color and all the safety features and that Tiger Woods is still alive. Lol if Genesis was smart he would do a commercial for them for free because that car saved his life. Cheers 🥂 to being a Genesis owner!
