GV70 Black Chrome Oxidation

I was waiting for GV70 since the GV80's showed up at the dealers. Did not like GV80 side chrome accents (too much chrome gives it a cheap look and may people complain about it, of course this is a matter of taste).

I was very eager and as soon as I saw the car in the showroom, I filled the financial application, negotiated the trade in, etc. The only thing stopping me was -- they have just one car and it was in the showroom, not available for the test drive. So I went elsewhere and did a test drive there. The car dives great and I like everything about it.
But on my way out I stopped to look once more and noticed all the door handles being appointed with the black chrome accents have huge black matted oxidation from people touching the handles. Unfortunately, the 3.5 Turbo models all come with the black chrome accents option. I am very concerned because I drive a lot in the mountains and they put very aggressive chemicals on the road. I know how to maintain the chrome to look good, but this oxidation just from hands touching is scary. This black chrome will not withstand a single winter season. I contacted Genesis but got a brush off as a response. Then I started looking on the forums and see a lot of black chrome complaints for Genesis and KIA.

I am hoping to get the feedback from the people who already have GV70 with 3.5 turbo and willing to share their experience. Maybe the car I saw was just a single "bad apple" case, or maybe it is a more wide spread issue. This is truly a fly in the ointment case and is the only thing which is stopping me from buying this car.

I like yours. Going to do the wheels, too? If so, make sure you get ceramic coating on it.
The dealer warrantied my oxidizing chrome and replaced it with shinny chrome. Said that's what the vin # called for. How do I decode that. Not that I don't trust the dealer... but i don't...

How does that make any sense? If you have the onyx chrome originally, how can the dealer now say you get shiny/polished chrome as a replacement? Sounds more like your dealer doesn't want to deal with the replacement onyx again spotting like your original pieces.

I just got a Sport Prestige and will cross my fingers my onyx chrome doesn't spot and oxidize. I'll be sure to coat it with some wax and hope that helps.

Wow. Go online and download an illustrated parts breakdown manual and find the specific part. Google the part number if it doesn’t tell you the specific name. If you had pics of the vehicle to prove what it came with or the window sticker stating it had black chrome that should help. Honestly, I didn’t even know the GV70’s even came with shiny chrome. Maybe on the base model but I don’t know which one you have.
@wayne14133 I had a base GV70 loaner for awhile dealing with my GV70 SP issue (long story), and the base has shiny chrome.

Judging from what everyone is saying it will spot. All I used to do was wipe it down with a microfiber towel. Make sure it is a little moist. I didn’t like the fact I had to do it all the time so I got the window trim and handles vinyl wrapped (chrome delete). Never had a problem since. Lasts 3-4 years. Too bad the grill can’t be done.
