I read reviews on the GV80, for example Consumer Reports, and they trashed the GV80 over jerky transmission blah blah and confusing controls and told myself they had to have had faulty vehicle. OK the controls are sometimes at least, 'non-conventional' and require getting used to I'll give them that much, but overall I thought they were way off base. The GV80 has a state of the art dual-clutch transmission and normally the shifts are silky smooth and unfelt by the driver or passengers. The tachometer is the only indication of the shifts, so when this jerky transmission showed up on my vehicle, I said to myself, this is what they might be referring to? What to do now? Have the car checked? Bail out and get rid of what might be a lemon? This vehicle I acquired used with 17K.

So I've had my GV80 about 4 months now and had done mostly in town driving. I have had few miles on the highway. I was excited to take my first long trip in the vehicle. Well within the first hour of a six hour drive I was getting quite concerned. I had enabled most of the safety and driver assistance features (lane and forward collision avoidance) On the smart? Cruise control I had the 3 customization {and learned behavior} options (distance, acceleration, wait time) set to 50% or higher. Within the first few hours I surmised that this subject condition occurs in traffic with the cruise. The condition seems to be a chain reaction of the safety features fighting one another resulting in an 'alternate fuel delivery' or fail safe operation. So the car still moves, but at a vastly reduced rate and there is dramatic loss of power. A maximum of about 50% triggered speed typical and the gas pedal would be almost all the way to floor. This condition is what inspired the title there is sudden shift from 8th to 3rd and the engine screams RPMs it feel horrible and cannot believe it is good for the transmission.

For the rest of the trip I avoided using the cruise and turned off the lane features. In the end the condition is triggered under two situations: Since getting out of traffic in a high speed lane requires a quick emergency flasher and head for the shoulder. I learned that getting out of this fail-safe mode requires putting the vehicle in P and turning engine off and back on. On restart everything is always good. Power and normal acceleration are restored.

-Traffic, with cruise (a car passes you up and cuts in front)
-Left had turns. (collision avoidance)

For the remainder of the trip I knew I could minimize the awful shifting and degradation in power by not using cruise and praying on left turns, which I normally do anyway.

A few days latter I started my journey back. And my debugging the condition involved what triggers the sudden down shift? By the way, paddle shifters, if you have tried using them what you will find is that after a few seconds mode goes back to “D” or auto. Consulting the book or ether did not yield anything useful, but here is tidbit for staying with me, to keep manual shifting with the paddles, one has to be in “sport” mode!

This is how learned the when the condition is triggered, the car is in gear 8 and forced abruptly to 3!

Why would the makers want to do this ever? Well maybe its “engine braking” to avoid an accident? Not sure but it feels terrible.

What I was able to determine is some of this is triggering is by the 'auto learn' three options. I first set to 'default' to unlearn a possible prior owner's phycho driving habits then I also set them to minimum. Anything less than minimum would trigger the chain reaction, Jerka, Jigga, bang bang, condition in traffic.

I believe the culprit that sets off the chain reaction is Lane Safety "Active Assist",
downgrade to Lane Safety to "Warning only". Forward safety is is Active Assist. Not positive this fixes Left turn issues or why, but so far so good.

I think it was you I asked in another thread, but which engine do you have and is it a RWD or AWD? I have none of these issues with RWD and the 2.5 with my 21 Prestige.
As far as the controlls being confusing, I think that is because there are so many thing you can do with this car. After about 9 months I am finally getting used to the controls and can do most things without thinking. I am old, so things don't come fast like they used to, but I am getting there with this car. But ****, the stuff you can set up in this car makes my 2018 Audi and my wife's 2017 BMW look like something out of the dark ages.

Jhon,
Thanks for your reply.
I have a 2022 Advanced Plus, 3.5-6, AWD.
Regarding the controls, I was simply echoing the CS review. I have gotten used to most of the controls. I applaud Genesis for doing something different in most cases.
I haven't given up on the vehicle by any stretch.
As to whether people experience these issues or not, I think it is in the settings of the safety systems as to whether one experiences the issue. This gives me hope that it will be understood and can be fixed algorithmically with software.

Best regards,
Ramon
