GV80 - repeat rear differential failure

2291 Views 19 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Jackmccrory
Hello,

The rear differential on my 21 GV80 was diagnosed as bad at 13K miles - howling from the rear end when coasting which turned out to be the rear diff (diff fluid smelled burned, lots of metal pieces in the diff fluid) - first replacement diff was bad out of the box so the car is now technically on diff #3.

I am now at 24K miles and I have once again the same howling from the rear end while coasting - same symptoms as when it failed at 13K miles. I have an appointment later this week to get this looked at.

Has anyone else experienced multiple rear diff failures and what the outcome of that situation?

Quick update - car has been at the dealership for a couple of weeks now and is supposed to get a new rear diff installed today - 3rd replacement. Needless to say my car is a lemon

Thanks for keeping us posted on your issue. It's helpful to others like me who own that same vehicle because we can be aware of the potential for this issue. So far, my GV80 with 12K miles displays no issues, and I feel bad for you. Hopefully, the third time will be the charm for you.

Quick update: I got my GV80 back on 2/2 after spending 3 weeks at the dealership to get the rear diff replaced for the 3rd time(per Tech line) and I still have the same whine/grinding sound from the rear end. The response from the dealership has been awful with no callback or follow up how to resolve the issue. Buyback process has been initiated - the car has been at the dealership for 70 days since March 2022.
My differential has been replaced,5 times
On my 2021 gv80, going in for the sixth one.
Don't know what to do about it!?

I am sorry that you have had to experience this. Have you opened a case with Genesis? I am currently waiting for a decision on a buyback of my car as it was returned to me with a bad rear diff after the 3rd replacement.

I'm no expert, but this sounds like something other than the differential. Something is causing the differential to go bad. They should look further. Altough there is an issue with that part, most people have not even had one issue with it, including me.
Sensors, AWD module, Transfer case, and 4 differentials replaced on '22 GV70 with 10k miles, over 4 months under repairs. Genesis needs to publish and/or recall as the forums are piling up with the same issue. Buyback/lemon process initiated. For those who haven't had the issue yet, my guess (opinion) is they will at some point experience rear diff issues thousands of miles in...

Considering how frequently the rear differential seems to fail you would think that there should be an external factor contributing to it wearing out prematurely. Unfortunately the direction from Genesis seems to be to just replace the diff and that there is no "golden" solution to the problem.

Good luck with the buyback. Mine was just approved last week - I will miss the GV80, it is an absolutely fabulous car but I will not miss the Hyundai dealership service department.

Agreed, would really love to get another GV70, and fortunately our dealer has been very helpful and on point. How long was it for your buyback approval to take?

Approval took about 6 weeks which in my opinion is a too long - weekly calls from Genesis did keep me updated on the progress. I am supposed to get the financials figured out next week and hopefully the car will be gone in the next 10 days or so.

Let us know the year and trim package and How much they give you. If you don't mine. I am very curious.

Thanks for the heads up. Another question, did they (dealership) give you back the repaired vehicle with new differential, or do they hold it until the buyback is completed? Also, did they give the option of a replacement vs buyback? Thanks again.
Hi folks. I purchased a new 2023 GV80 Prestige 2.5 in October of 2022. I am experiencing vibration issues from the drive train especially when in ECO mode and while accelerating slowly. At first I thought it was road conditions but have since determined the vibration occurs on very smooth roads also. I am feeling it through the seat, through the arm rest, through the gas pedal, and through the steering wheel. I am also experiencing the howling noise from the rear end as others have described. This is not acceptable for any new car especially one with a $70K price tag. I have an open claim with Genesis and I am getting nowhere. They will not buy back the car and they say my issues don't meet the PA lemon law requirements. I should have stayed with Lexus where I experience 20 years of worry free and enjoyable driving. If anyone reading this post is considering purchasing a GV80 I suggest running the other way!
I have a similar issue in my 23 3.5 prestige

which dealership did you work with in PA?

Exactly the same issues with my G 80. Transfer case we’re differential etc. Finally did a buyback.
