My 2021 GV80 has a whine (hum) when I reach about 35 mph. I have eliminated tire problems, and believe the whine or hum may be coming from the transmission. Is this normal? Dealer says he can't hear anything unusal>

There is a thread here, somewhere, about that "hum". I call it a driveline whine. In any case, it's likely the transfer case, and, odds are, it's normal, but just a bit irritating! Some, however, have has it diagnosed as a defective transfer case & had it replaced.

Which engine and is it All wheel drive or RW? That might help in the responses.

I have a 2.5 with RWD and no such issues.

I also have the driveline whine between 30 and 40 MPH. (3.5 AWD) It occurs when there is that fine line between accelerating and decelerating, almost coasting, just feathering the gas. I believe that it is the rear ring and pinion gears slightly out of spec. The mechanic rode with me and agreed. We test drove a different GV80 and it was quiet. I have an appointment to have a new rear axle installed (Genesis does not field repair transmissions or rear axles) on August 29. I will update as to if this fixes the problem or not.

UPDATE! The dealer installed a new rear differential and that solved the problem. Interesting fact, Genesis dealers don't repair differentials or transmissions. Genesis requires them to install brand new units.

John K., You described the symptoms I have with my GV80 3.5 exactly. My dealer has had my car for over 24 days total and keeps reporting "no problem found". The dealer finally agreed to replace drivetrain components if I can show him your post that describes what component you had replaced that actually solved the problem. I know you said "rear differential", but would you mind providing me the name of your dealer so my dealer's service manager could contact them to make sure that he is ordering exactly the right component? Thank you!

My dealer is Luther Genesis in Bloomington MN. Their number is 952-377-2000 and the service advisor is Austin. The part number for the Carrier assembly-differential is 53000-43610. It solved my problem! Another tip: I made an appointment with the MECHANIC for a ride along with me driving. I then was able to duplicate the problem while he listened. Try that. My last name is King if they want to look it up. I hope this helps!

John,

Thank you! This is extremely helpful. Part of my frustration with this dealer was that on my very first visit on this issue I did a ride along with one of the dealer's shop mechanics. He acknowledged hearing the noise and that it wasn't the turbo or tire noise that they tried to convince me it was before the ride. Then I left the car with them for a week and picked it up with a "no problem found" result. They clearly could hear the noise and knew it was abnormal but probably couldn't figure out what to replace so they just took the easy path out with the NPF diagnosis. I brought it in a week later and left it for 17 days and they told me they thought the front end was out of alignment and abnormal front tire wear was causing the noise (it didn't help). After having a rather loud discussion about their BS diagnosis within earshot of other waiting customers, the service writer finally gave in a said "Ok, get me the part number that fixed it and I'll replace that part." I'm thinking about taking your information to another dealer and see if they will replace it since I had such a bad experience with this dealer (Napleton Hyunday in Indianapolis). Unfortunately we don't have any dedicated Genesis dealers in our area.

Again, thanks so much for sending me this. You and the dealer mechanic you rode with were pretty astute to be able to figure out which component was at fault since that noise could have come from several drivetrain components. This should save some trial and error activity for my dealer. I love the car other than this issue, so looking forward to a fix!

Tom,
I was able to make the noise come and go by feathering the throttle between coasting and accelerating around 35 MPH. At that point it was a noise that I recognized as a poorly set up ring and pinion gear. I was just crossing my fingers that it was the REAR differential and not the front! They replaced the rear diff and the problem was solved. I hope that you have the same experience! Good Luck! Let me know how things turn out for you. I also love my car and so far with 16,000 miles that is the ONLY thing that has gone wrong.
