Whenever I talk to people about Genesis vehicles, there seems to be some confusion as to who owns them and how they came to be. So let's set the record straight for those that aren't familiar with Genesis.
The Genesis name began in 2008 when Hyundai debuted the Genesis luxury sedan at the New York Auto Show. In 2010 it was joined by the Genesis 2-door couple.
It wasn't until 2015 when Hyundai announced that Genesis Motor would be its own separate brand at the New York Auto Show.
Chris Hosford, Hyundai's United States spokesman, cited three main reasons to make Genesis a stand-alone brand:
- Genesis extant seven years in the luxury car market was successful
- Genesis ranked among the top three segment sellers
- Customers demanded a separate Genesis division
Genesis launched in the U.S. in late 2016, with the sale of the G80 and G90.
So Genesis is its own car company but it is still underneath the Hyundai Motor Company umbrella.
